Berlin

Wednesday 7 November 2012

Berlin was everything I had hoped for and more.

It was bigger than I expected and busier than I expected but I LOVE that city.

From the moment we started putting together travel plans for our time in Europe, Berlin was at the top of my list.  I have been fascinated by it's history for quite some time and while I'd never personally visited before, I felt like I knew some of the city.  In fact, as we drove into the centre from the airport I was pointing out the Reichstag, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews, Brandenburg Gate, Victory Tower and the Tiergarten.  I think I surprised Joe.  To finally see and experience these places in person was so exhilarating.

Berlin has this edge to it - there's graffiti everywhere, it's not particularly clean but it has personality.  Some may not characterize it as a pretty city but there is something endearing about it's boldness and it's individuality.  It's not trying to be something and I like that about it.

We had 4 full days in the city and I feel like we hardly scratched the surface.  I had no idea just how much there is to do and how much I'd want to do.  We filled our days walking, sightseeing, exploring, learning and by the end of the day my mind was bursting and my feet were aching but we were excited for what the next day would bring.

From the wall, to memorials, to museums, we saw a lot and over the next few posts, I'll break it down day by day and hopefully can convey just how cool Berlin is.

  2. Deliriously jealous. It's right at the top of places I'd love to live someday.

Did you know there are more working artists in Berlin than any other city in the world? So. Cool.

  5. I love Berlin! Was lucky enough to stop there with colleagues as part of a work trip a few years ago. I hope to visit with the hubs & new baby next fall!
As cheesy as it seemed, the city bus tours that started at Checkpoint Charlie were fantastic! We got to see the layout of the city before starting out on-foot discovery.
I paid to have my passport stamped at Checkpoint Charlie and got more than I bargained for though-they filled up almost 3 whole pages with all the souvenir stamps!

  9. I wish I had your experience. We only had about 2 days there, and I did not understand the city until just before we left. I thought it was dirty, old, deteriorating and full of construction everywhere... But then finally at the end I kinda started to understand the vibe, and wished I could start over!

Can't wait to see your photos. Relive it a little through you :-)
